DAY ONE - Saturday, Nov. 17: PLAYA POTRERO Travel on independent flights to Liberia, Costa Rica. (Suggested flight is non-stop on Southwest from BWI. Southwest tickets go on sale about 4-5 months prior to departure date.) Ground transport arranged through hotel for individual arrivals or by van if large group arrives at same time.
Check in to the Bahia del Sol Hotel, located on Playa Potrero. Enjoy the tranquil waters of this protected bay, the perfect spot for swimming, stand up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaking, sailing, and other water sports.
Spend time at leisure on the beach or at the pool before meeting up with Erin at the beachside palapa for a gentle yoga flow to invite ease into your body after a day of travel. Afterward, join the group for a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel’s restaurant.
DAY TWO – Sunday, Nov. 18: PLAYA DANTE AND PLAYA DANTITA
Start the day with Erin for an invigorating vinyasa flow on the beach, suitable for the whole family. Connect movement and breath while taking in the fresh Costa Rican air and beautiful scenery. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel before starting your first day of exploration.
Head to Playa Dante in nearby Las Catalinas to enjoy a secluded beach with opportunities for snorkeling, hiking or mountain biking the extensive trail system, kayaking, SUP, swimming or just relaxing. Enjoy lunch on your own at the outdoor restaurant located right off the beach.
Depending on the tide, take a walk along the beach and over dramatic rock formations to the secluded beach of Playa Dantita. Only accessible when the tide is low or via the hiking trail, this tranquil space is ideal for looking for small sea creatures clinging to the rocks, snorkeling from the beach, or possibly encountering the howler monkey troop that frequents the beachside.
After lunch on your own at Las Catalinas, return to the Bahia for time to relax before heading to the Costa Rica Sailing Center for a late afternoon of fun family-oriented games on the beach. Sip a cocktail and enjoy light snacks as you watch the sunset and enjoy a bonfire. Explore the local dining scene this evening on your own with several options within walking distance of the hotel.
DAY THREE – Monday, Nov. 19: PLAYA GRANDE AND PLAYA MINAS
Start the day with a gentle flow and guided meditation on the beach with Erin. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel before beginning your day. Head out to the tranquil oasis of Playa Grande. Enjoy a 2-hour family surf lesson on one of the more remote sections of the beach – a perfect place for beginners to feel comfortable in the water – with Tim and Johel of Mojo Surf Adventures.
Even those who might not be so keen on surfing should give this a try. With the right instruction, it is truly a fun, family-friendly activity that will create lasting memories. Photos will be taken to capture that thrilling moment when you manage to stand atop your board – with Johel’s assistance, that will happen!
Then, take a bumpy ride to the secluded beach of Playa Minas where drinks for adults and kids will be waiting for you. Spend the afternoon exploring the calm waters of this “locals” beach. The secluded, difficult-to-access location means few crowds – you’ll likely have the beach almost to yourself. It’s simply a magical location.
Options include paddleboards, boogie boards, and snorkeling. Enjoy a BBQ lunch or dinner (timing will depend on the surf this day). We’ll have music, dancing, and much fun as we celebrate everyone’s new surfing skills.
DAY FOUR – Tuesday, Nov. 20: PLAYA TAMARINDO
Start the day with pranayama practice on the beach. Learn different breathing techniques to activate the calming nervous system, nourishing the mind and body, and leaving you feeling joyous and tranquil. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel before beginning your day.
OPTION ONE: Today, get an early start with a half-day fishing excursion. Head out to the abundant coastal waters for a relaxed morning fishing and enjoying the scenic vistas. Return with your catch to the Beach House restaurant and have your fish cooked to order for lunch.
OPTION TWO: Head out for a vinyasa yoga session with Erin on a secluded, uninhabited island. Connect with the primal elements of the universe through intention, movement, and breath. Emerge from the practice with clarity, strength, tranquility, and gratitude. Enjoy fresh fruits and batidos (whipped fruit drinks) after class.
OPTION THREE: Do you have a PADI certification and want to get out for a dive? Head out to the Catalinas islands, a world-class diving destination, with a local SCUBA guide.
OPTION FOUR: Anything else you want to experience? Let us know and we can arrange the perfect morning excursion.
For those who are more interested in relaxing this morning, remain at the hotel and we will pick you up around mid-day when we depart for Tamarindo.
This lively beach town has an enormous variety of restaurants to choose from, many beachside. Spend the afternoon in town exploring the shops and beach. While Playa Potrero offers tranquil waters, Playa Dante offers hidden treasures and Playa Grande offers wide open stretches with surf, Tamarindo is a true surf town with a fun beach scene and fabulous waves that are ideal for boogie boarding, surfing or body surfing. If you just prefer to sit and people watch, Tamarindo is perfect for that as well. Relax and someone will likely come by offering food and drinks at some point – you’ll never need to get up!
Meet for a happy hour mindful drinking experience at Witches Rock, a beachside bar. Watch the sunset, play beach games and enjoy a casual dinner of fish tacos, burgers, pizzas and more before transferring back to your hotel (food not included). (B,D)
DAY FIVE – Wednesday, Nov. 21: PLAYA MATAPALO
Start the day with a gentle yoga session on the beach with Erin. Stretch your body and mind to prepare for the adventurous day that lies ahead. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel before beginning your day.
Spend the day at Diamante Adventure Park. Located about an hour away along the Monkey Trail, a locally famous local road, experience a full day of adventure and activities.
For the thrill-seekers, enjoy the rush of the park’s ocean-view dual zip-line course. Zip along parallel lines with a friend or family member as you take in the dramatic scenery. Enjoy a superman line, a free fall “quick jump” and hanging bridges, some of which are suspended over crocodiles.
For those who are less interested in thrill-seeking, explore the Botanical Gardens and the area’s largest Animal Sanctuary, home to a wide variety of animal species including toucans, monkeys, jaguars, crocodiles, pumas, and more. These animals are all rescues, many of which are in the process of being rehabilitated, not healthy animals that are caged. Also visit the wildcat habitat, the butterfly observatory, and the ever-popular sloth habitat.
You may also choose to spend time on Playa Matapalo where you can enjoy snorkeling, SUP, kayaking and swimming.
Return to the Bahia del Sol in the late afternoon. Dinner is on your own this evening to enjoy one of the nearby restaurants.
DAY SIX – HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Thursday, Nov. 22: PLAYA CONCHAL
Start the day with a beachside gratitude flow with Erin. This vigorous vinyasa flow will detox and energize you! You’ll open your heart with deep stretches that unleash your anahata (heart chakra) energy to cultivate love, awareness, and appreciation. We’ll end with an extended savasana and guided gratitude meditation. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel before beginning your day.
Nearby Playa Conchal is considered by many to be one of the prettiest beaches in Costa Rica. “Conchal” in Spanish means “shell” and this beach comprises millions of crushed shells. Popular with both tourists and locals, you will not have this beach to yourself! From the beach you can snorkel amongst the rocky outcroppings, rent a jet ski or paddleboard, enjoy an on-the-beach massage, go horseback riding, or peruse the stalls of the several vendors who routinely set up shop.
For those looking for a little beach walk, in addition to walking the length of Conchal, you can easily pop over to the black sand of PLAYA BRASILITO to enjoy a smoothie or snack from one of the local sodas (locally-owned restaurants) that line the town square of this very Tico town.
Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal in a nontraditional space: the welcoming, surfside Costa Rica Sailing Center. Enjoy a dip in the pool or ocean, play volleyball, join in a family-friendly game of tag football, or simply stare at the sunset with a cool, tropical beverage in hand. For those who can’t miss the Thanksgiving game, head over earlier in the day to watch football at the bar.
We will share a final toast this evening, celebrating an amazing week of community, adventure, and PURA VIDA!
DAY SEVEN – Friday, Nov. 23: Depart for flights home.
